Comedy with a Conscience – Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust Fund Raiser
When: Baxter Theatre, Saturday March 31, 2012 @ 8.15
Come and laugh and make a difference at the same time. Some of Cape Town’s most talented and celebrated comedians have combined forces to raise much-needed funds for Rape Crisis Cape Town.
The Comedy With A Conscience Rape Crisis Fundraiser takes place at the Baxter Concert Hall on Saturday, March 31 at 8.15pm. Tickets are R150 and all proceeds will go to Rape Crisis.
The Baxter theatre have donated the venue for the event and performers, including Cape Town’s favourite son, Marc Lottering, Mitchells Plain’s King of Comedy, Kurt Schoonraad, Worcester’s Queen of Comedy, Shimmy Isaacs, Bloemfontein’s funniest, Anne Hirsch, veteran columnist Marianne Thamm and Cape Town’s hilarious, quirky acoustic musical comedy act, The Brothers Streep are guaranteed to entertain and delight.
Multi-award winning and world -renowned cartoonist, our very own Zapiro, has donated a cartoon that will be auctioned on the night.
In November last year Rape Crisis in Cape Town announced that it might need to close some of its services due to a lack of funding. Considering that there are over 66 196 (according to 2010/2011 Stats SA figures) sexual offences reported in this country every year, we have to find ways of funding this critically needed service.
Rape Crisis, is a non-profit organisation, which runs three centres in Cape Town, has directly assisted more than 2500 rape survivors per year and is the oldest centre for rape counselling in the country, having been established in 1976.
Rape Crisis director Kathleen Dey said a shortfall in the budget due to European Union donors pulling out of funding organisations in South Africa meant Rape Crisis was facing a bleak future.
“Even if we reduce our budget significantly we still have a shortfall in our January-February 2012 financial year,” Dey told journalist Steve Kretzmann
Last year Comedy with A Conscience raised R10 000 to provide sanitary towels for young women and girls who cannot afford these essential items.
Tickets are R150. Book through Computicket.
